Type of Boat
When evaluating boat lifts, the biggest factor to consider is the type of boat. To begin with, what type of boat do you currently have? Specifically, the weight and length of the boat are the two most important factors.

Water Depth
Another important factor to consider is water depth. Depending on the depth helps determine the type of lift. Deeper water may require a floating lift or more creative accommodations.

Motorized or Manual
This one may be self-explanatory, however deciding on a motorized or manual is personal preference. Some lifts are manually operated while some have electric winches. The latter being more convenient, but also requires a power source as well as more care.

To determine the correct boat lift capacity for your boat, start by calculating its total weight. Add the boat’s dry weight, the weight of any outboard motors, and the weight of all installed accessories (such as towers, bimini tops, generators, and swim platforms). Then include the weight of the fuel (6 lbs. per gallon) and the water weight (8 lbs. per gallon) from freshwater tanks, wastewater tanks, and any live wells. After calculating the total, add a 20% margin of safety and choose the next higher lift capacity.
